Complete examinations
We provide comprehensive eye health and vision examinations for adults and children. Evaluations are conducted to determine not only the presence of refractive (focusing) problems, but to rule out external and internal eye diseases, including cataracts and glaucoma. For this purpose, we have the latest diagnostic equipment. The non-contact tonometer allows us to measure eye pressure (for glaucoma) without touching the eye, and is done on everyone possible.
To more thoroughly examine the back of the eyes of adults, we often recommend that the pupils be dilated. (If you have not had your pupils dilated previously, we recommend you have a driver available, in case your vision is bothered temporarily by the dilation). A digital fundus camera allows pictures to be taken of the inside of the eye (the retina) to better follow potential eye diseases, and as a baseline to compare over time.
When indicated, we perform more detailed peripheral vision testing on our Oculus Visual Field Analyzer. This instrument is state-of-the-art, and the "gold standard" for peripheral vision testing. It is helpful in monitoring for glaucoma, as well as neurological or vascular problems that effect not only the eyes, but the rest of the visual system.
We always check for signs of diabetes, one of the leading causes of blindness in the USA. Diabetes causes changes in the blood vessels and vascular system, resulting in dot and blot hemorrhages, ballooning of the capillaries (microaneurysms), areas where the retinas lack proper blood flow (cotton-wool spots). Later, as the disease progresses, new, abnormal blood vessels can grow, which can lead to serious hemorrhages in the retinas and the back of the eyes.
Macular degeneration is another common problem that we carefully watch for. It can result in serious loss of central vision, to the point where reading, driving, and other tasks that require good, sharp vision are impossible.
The dilated exam, as well as the digital retinal photos allow us to catch this problem early, and maximize your odds of
maintaining good vision.
When the eye examination is completed, Dr. Bridge studies all the assembled information. He then makes a professional decision on how to give each patient the highest possible visual efficiency. This may take the form of eyeglasses or contact lenses, a referral to another health care professional, or a clean bill of visual health.
We recommend examinations annually.
